Book also features unused iron-on transfers for designs.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCMHztHICI/AAAAAAAAArw/clBuXP0h4Qo/s400/017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503552810413137954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCMHWwMiaI/AAAAAAAAAro/srpSarED74U/s400/016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503552802641447330" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 285px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLqD0zbMI/AAAAAAAAArQ/c4JoZvIxYcQ/s400/013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503552299344293058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLnjdWA_I/AAAAAAAAAqw/1EGRyCpszGg/s400/007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503552256296223730" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLKfgHnPI/AAAAAAAAAqo/BCiXgA9S_8A/s400/008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503551757017914610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 312px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLJy6hwWI/AAAAAAAAAqg/m_088nb9hww/s400/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503551745049084258" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 314px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLJdbqOEI/AAAAAAAAAqY/PrG_1PqEmDc/s400/004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503551739282470978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 308px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLI4SW2-I/AAAAAAAAAqQ/vkT7Zfs8NLs/s400/006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503551729311341538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TGCLIXB_rCI/AAAAAAAAAqI/LVlfMeIFvKo/s400/001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503551720384343074" />

For retro crafting books, traditional thread crochet, and fun vintage merchandise, please check my Etsy shop at www.acadiancrochet.etsy.comAcadian Crochethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11790471807140991040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505260704738446777.post-84632445960894091952010-08-03T09:58:00.000-07:002010-08-03T10:14:18.227-07:001950 Quick Tips in Crochet<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLb1syLCI/AAAAAAAAAqA/eQWPPN2lL3c/s400/003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229886476528674" />

The Coats and Clark's Quick Tips in Crochet series features patterns for household items and accessories, many with flower motifs. This 1950 book has patterns for potholders and hot pads, along with covered hangers, handbags, nut cup, a corsage, an apron, and a tiny doll curtain pull. There are crocheted jewelry items that would look great today, along with a pair of flowered slippers which are crafted by sewing the crocheted pieces onto a wedge shoe sole.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLNqFvyzI/AAAAAAAAAp4/tR9aadr9XRs/s400/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229642841836338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLNPUi61I/AAAAAAAAApw/myq8bnIf7tg/s400/004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229635656149842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLM58sVtI/AAAAAAAAApo/Qf834hdgfuc/s400/007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229629918959314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLMYR5I6I/AAAAAAAAApg/jJObNeNRXD4/s400/006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229620881073058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TFhLL87Go9I/AAAAAAAAApY/tJHwdgqW2XA/s400/008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501229613537731538" />

For retro crafting books, traditional thread crochet, and fun vintage finds, please check my Etsy shop at www.acadiancrochet.etsy.comAcadian Crochethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11790471807140991040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505260704738446777.post-87759135861224058782010-07-26T17:38:00.000-07:002010-07-26T18:06:47.138-07:00Old-Fashioned Crochet ThreadsSeems it's getting more and more difficult to find crochet thread in stores. Even the craft outlets that carry it often don't have a wide variety. Fortunately you can still find wonderful threads by shopping on the internet, and a trip to a thrift store, garage sale, or estate sale can yield some great finds.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 368px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TE4sAcLwFCI/AAAAAAAAApI/7xcdVVzxhuk/s400/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498380581143057442" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 326px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TE4rG5XUBJI/AAAAAAAAAow/5xLyd9n-gnY/s400/007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498379592543765650" />

Pictured above are vintage spools of Coats and Clark's #5 pearl cotton thread, found in a bag of notions at a local thrift store. This high-quality thread is mentioned in many old pattern books. One spool still has a 70-cent price tag from the old Ben Franklin five-and-dime chain.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 390px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TE4rHt06VJI/AAAAAAAAAo4/GtfkFsOjxsM/s400/009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498379606626555026" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 386px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TE4rF5eWN1I/AAAAAAAAAog/KWl4smiQqjQ/s400/001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498379575393400658" />

Another old favorite is Star Puritan bedspread cotton, pictured here in a lovely green. The two sides are stitched together with a border using double crochet, chains, and picots. Potholder is crafted with #10 bedspread cotton and a #7 steel hook.

This pattern is from the 1959 Coats and Clark's book "Crochet Favorites Old and New" which also features instructions for doilies, motifs, a hankerchief edging, and a tablecloth.

If you wanted to make the Rose Bower bedspread you would need 77 flower motifs as well as 76 plain motifs for a single bed, and 94 flower motifs and 93 plain motifs for a double bed. I'm using #10 bedspread cotton and a #7 hook, which will create a smaller piece. I also plan to tea-dye it to a darker beige, giving it an antique look for primitive or Victorian decor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TDnoSvCfzII/AAAAAAAAAlY/USDnB0s9pmk/s400/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492676629117258882" />

The intro says the Mediterranean Surf doily is "reminiscent of ocean waves with a stylized sun center." The mail-order pattern is for a classic crocheted evening jacket which is crafted with lightweight yarn and a 00 steel hook.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 338px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TA8Aa5QBs4I/AAAAAAAAAgE/4O-DFC8aDok/s400/019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480599733577823106" />

And this crocheted top would look great today. The pattern is from an American Thread Company book from the 1970's but I suspect the design is older than that, since I've seen it in other pieces. This doily is worked with bedspread cotton and a #7 steel hook, consisting of chains and triple crochets. The leaves are made by decreasing triple crochets and are topped by a triple crochet cluster. Flowers are made with a six-triple crochet cluster. It measures about 12 inches across.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 298px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TAwt2Z9k2NI/AAAAAAAAAfs/VKQ29pGY5Tc/s400/001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479805259308390610" />

For traditional thread crochet and vintage goodness, please check my Etsy shop at www.acadiancrochet.etsy.comAcadian Crochethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11790471807140991040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505260704738446777.post-14412870636270879642010-06-03T13:15:00.000-07:002010-06-03T13:31:12.302-07:00Needlepoint for the Crafty Hoops Fan<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lwgTSH_N478/TAgQ-qwRL7I/AAAAAAAAAfk/JI5BAmdnDQA/s400/023.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478647615510884274" />
Here's a couple of needlepoint patterns in honor of the NBA Western Conference Los Angeles Lakers and Eastern Conference Boston Celtics.
