A Different Kind of Pansy Doily

Although mostly used as a doily, this pattern is for a placemat that's part of the "Dinette" series in the Star Puritan Crochet book of 1953. Set also includes patterns for a potholder, large and small hot plate mats, napkin holder cover, and glass jackets.

The thread color for the flowers is shaded pansy. Many older patterns call for this thread. The flowers are crocheted onto green stems.

Double-sided potholder. Sides are crocheted together with row of flowers.

The Famous Puritan Crochet Book #100 from 1953.
Also has patterns for Grape Doily, Grape Hot Plate Mat, Calla Lily Doily (with amazing 3-D flowers), Pineapple Pincushion, chair sets, and a bedspread.

These fun thread crochet stars were crafted with triple strands of purple, green, and gold, the colors of Mardi Gras. They measure about five inches across and can be used for motifs, coasters, and decorations. Crocheted with #10 crochet cotton and #00 hook. A great gift for the Carnival reveler on your holiday list.

If You Love Classic Knitted Sweaters

I've just added new pictures to my etsy listing for a McCall's Needlework and Crafts Magazine from 1986. This magazine is in excellent condition and would be a great resource for anyone who loves classic preppy sweaters. Lots of patterns, also instructions for other projects including a stunning abstract autumn leaves quilt. The back of the magazine is filled with those little ads from the days before the internet, for all sorts of stuff you could get in the mail. Great yarn ads too. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=33139572

Tiny Crochet with Sewing Thread

These two doilies were crocheted with quilting thread and a tiny 13/14 steel hook. The Lily of the Valley doily measures about six inches across. It would have been about 12 inches had I used a #7 hook and #10 crochet cotton.

If you like older thread crochet patterns, you'll notice most call for a hook size 11 or smaller, along with a finer thread.

Thread Crochet in Black

For a dramatic effect, try crocheting a traditional doily in black thread. This is the "Pineapples" pattern from Classic Doilies: Five Designs in Crochet, published by the American School of Needlework, 1992. I used bedspread weight cotton and a #6 steel hook. Measures about 21 inches across.
___________________________________________________________________
This is a challenging project in that the center is worked in the round, while the points on the edge are worked separately. I've also crocheted this doily in white, the color used in the pattern.

A Victorian doily in black would make a great gift for that unique person on your holiday list. I don't have this doily on etsy right now but I plan to make one soon that I'll put up for sale.
Please check my etsy shop for great gifts for cool people: www.etsy.com/shop/acadiancrochet.
Most items two to seven dollars. Thanks for looking!
